You will most likely need to pay a deposit for your rental, and you’ll also need to cover your expenses until you receive your first paycheck.
Beyond that, you don’t need a huge savings account to take a gap year abroad. Once you receive your first paycheck, you should be able to manage comfortably.
Of course, it can be an advantage to have a small savings buffer if you already know in advance that you want to travel and explore a lot during your stay.
The costs vary significantly from country to country. Talk to us about how much you’ll specifically need for the country you choose.
If you’re interested in an unpaid internship abroad, you can often apply for a grant. You can find more information via the link here.

It’s a good idea for most people to prepare a bit more for an interview that will take place in English.
We recommend that you try to “rehearse” the interview in your head. What questions would I like to ask? What questions do I think they’ll ask me? Which areas from my CV might we need to discuss in more detail?
This way, you can better prepare for English terms and phrases that will help you highlight your points. Feel free to make a list and write things down – of course, in English.
Additionally, we also provide advice on attire, specific questions you can ask, and much more in our guide below.

Typically, you’ll be departing a few weeks or months after applying. For most positions, being ready to travel as soon as possible significantly improves your chances.
While we can’t guarantee you’ll get the job, as it depends on factors like your interview performance and other candidates, we provide you with the best opportunities to secure the job you want.
If you want to travel soon, we strongly recommend applying as early as possible. This way, you have the best chance of landing a job that aligns with your desired start date and destination.
The jobs we recommend are typically in workplaces with lots of young people on the team—often other people who are also taking a gap year like you.
This is a great way to meet new people and form friendships with other young people from around the world. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to build an international network, both through your workplace and in the area where you’ll be living.
Companies abroad typically only hire you if you plan to stay for at least 6 months.
Most people who travel with us, choose to stay for 9-12 months—or even longer!
From a practical standpoint, it’s also a good idea to be away for at least 6 months, both in terms of your lease agreement and to give yourself enough time to experience the world and the many opportunities in your new country.
Unfortunately, we do not assist with volunteer work abroad.
When you do volunteer work, it’s an unpaid job.
We only help with paid work abroad and recommend that you take a paid job the first time you go.
But if you want to do volunteer work abroad during your gap year, we absolutely encourage you to do so! It’s also a great way to experience the world and try standing on your own two feet.
However, be aware that you need to have substantial savings, as such a trip can be quite expensive.
No matter what you choose, we hope you have the coolest gap year. And a journey you’ll remember for the rest of your life!
Of course, you can always go home again if you want to!
There can be many reasons to return home earlier than planned, and no one will hold it against you.
However, some companies may ask you to repay the flight tickets they provided if you go home before completing the probation period. The probation period is usually 6 months, depending on the workplace.
We certainly hope that you have the coolest gap year and an unforgettable time. You are guaranteed to step out of your comfort zone at some point during your journey. That’s completely normal.
Fortunately, it’s very rare that our travelers return home early during their gap year.
Yes, we are happy to help you find accommodation.

Have you just graduated from high school or university—or are you a student about to finish soon?
Then now is the best time to send your application. Most people apply for their gap year job right around the completion of their studies.
There is a natural limitation on the number of people who can travel because there aren’t unlimited job positions. Therefore, we recommend that you apply before the spots are filled.
A gap year is a great time to earn money, gain experience, and enhance your skills as an unskilled worker. Why not have some awesome experiences while you’re at it?
